The majority of these monasteries date back to the Middle Ages and they are essential in order to understand the history of La Rioja, because of the influence they exerted on this region during the second millennium.
The monasteries of Suso and Yuso, situated in San Millan de la Cogolla, are the most famous because of their importance in the birth of the Castilian language. Other monasteries like the one in Valvanera, Santa Maria la Real and Cañas etc are dotted around the region.
As well as their historic and artistic value, these monasteries continue being a focal point for the Christian faith.
La Rioja is also an important stage in the Pilgrim Route to Santiago de Compostela, where you will come across many pilgrims and be able to share your experiences.
